Report on "Laser Applications in Europe" -
A survey on laser-assisted materials processing
For several years already, optical and especially laser technologies are synonyms for hi-tech and future-oriented technology. Hence, although the laser is an established tool in industrial production and other applications, its potential is far from being exhausted.
Therefore, the European Photonics Industry Consortium, the European Laser Institute and Kienbaum Management Consultants have carried out an in-depth analysis in order to identify and to evaluate significant opportunities and challenges for the European laser community with regard to macro- and microprocessing, marking / engraving and biophotonics.
The study is based on the results of a two day-workshop, attended by 65 representatives from the laser-assisted manufacturing community, on additional interviews with international experts from seven countries, a field research among German manufacturers and thorough analysis of recent publications.
For each field of application, we introduce briefly the relevant laser technologies, we present representative examples, and point out advantages as well as future developments and trends. Relevant markets are identified and characterized in terms of volume, development, trends, main success factors and market entry barriers. The comparison of laser characteristics and advantages with the users’ / markets’ requirements is the basis for the assessment of the most promising combinations of laser applications and target markets.
